Review............Situated half way down King Street, the Champion is as traditional a boozer as you’ll find in this neck of the woods. Small but cosy it is always busy with lots of regular punters on stools by the bar, and you get the feeling that this is a place for a proper drink. The pub is simply decorated with a few pictures and oars scattered around, and a nice open fire on one side . When I pop in here I always feel that I should drink bitter and there are four ale pumps . Greene King I.P.A and Abbot Ale are normally available and the beer is well looked after . The lager drinker isn’t left out either, and Stella, Kronenbourg and Leffe are on tap as well as the usual spirits and half a dozen whiskys. This is not a food bar or a place to go in to down shots, but a proper old school pub environment, and that’s a rarity these days. If you like a nice drop of ale it’s worth popping in.
