Review...............The Baron is right next door to The Mitre and you can leave the side door of one and head into the other crossing Blackmore Head Yard in a matter of seconds. The most obvious thing to notice as you enter is its unusual dimensions, - it is very long but incredibly narrow, with the bar dominating the majority of the length. Owned by Greene King, the pub was refurbished in recent years and it was done fairly tastefully. Avoiding the usual light wood and cream colours that are almost regulation now, the walls, service area and furniture are dark stained wood. Good use is made of the space available with stools and a leaning rail along one wall and seats wherever they could comfortably fit them. The biggest change is the huge TV placed inside an ornate picture frame that looms over the bar. On the beer side expect to see Old Speckled Hen and the ubiquitous G.K. I.P.A. There is a reasonable wine menu and the food is a mix of salads, sandwiches and a large choice of burgers, competitively priced. In good weather if you go to the back of the building past the toilets there is a small outdoor seating area. This fills up quickly ,as does the rest of the Baron, especially at the weekend, so be prepared to wait for a seat. All in all a typical Greene King outlet.
